- Time.
Dear Mrs Figgins:
I graduated from MIT but I’m infinitely stupid.
I dated my girlfriend Jessica for 4 years. My family loves her, my friends love her, everyone loves her and more important than all that I am madly in love with her. But, I was so busy thinking that I should play the field because I had worked so hard during college, I neglected her and she broke up with me. She was right to do so.
She’s vacationing in Europe with 3 of her girlfriends and I hear she’s having a grand old time. Meanwhile I have never been so miserable in my whole life. I’ve left messages for her, but she hasn’t returned my calls. Her sister told me she still loves me but doesn’t trust that I won’t do my shtick again.
I want to marry her and now I may have lost her.
Is there anything that you can advise that might help?
Jason, Watertown
Dear Jason:
Sometimes we have to let go or even loose something priceless, before we realize our blessing.
My mother’s wise advice has always been “give time – ‘time’ ”. Jessica obviously needs it.
When she returns from holiday, and if she is willing to give your relationship another chance, you need to have your act together and priorities solidly in place. No more shtick.
She’s worth it. Now let her know you are, Jason.
