Needs right partner for school dance or it's FiFi!

Fun with friends!

Dear Mrs. Figgins:
There is a holiday dance coming up at my school.  The boy I’m interested in, has a girlfriend.
There is a guy, Jess,  who is interested in me and probably will ask me to the dance.  Our parents are friends.  I don’t want to hurt he’s feelings or anyone else’s for that matter, but Jess is totally not my type.
I really want to go to the dance, but if it means getting lassoed with Jess, I’d rather hang out with my poodle FiFi.
How would you handle this if you were me?
Cindy

Dear Cindy:
Even though “FiFi” is a great friend and loads of fun,  you really should think of a clever way to go to the dance with your friends.
Find a young man at school whom you can invite to join you as a “friend”, or go with a group of girlfriends.   This way, if Jess does ask you, you can politely say you’ve already made other plans, and no one will get their feelings hurt.
You’ll be able to dance with all your friends, including Jess without feeling lassoed.  Everyone will be able to relax and enjoy without any expectations.
Have a wonderful time!
Mrs. Figgins
