- Don’t mix them!
Dear Mrs. Figgins:
I have a crush on my boss. My mother is sure not happy but he’s not married and I’m not worried.
I’d like to give him a gift for the holidays.
What do you think is a good idea?
Christie
Dear Christie:
I think the best idea is that your boss, remain “your boss”. Mixing business and pleasure is not in your best interest.
As an employee you are under no obligation to get your boss a gift.
A holiday card is appropriate and follows proper etiquette.
If your boss gives gifts to you and co-workers, you do not have to reciprocate. A Thank You note is polite and perfectly acceptable.
No gift is better than the wrong gift. However, if you insist on a gift, get together with others in your office to give “the boss” a gift from “the group”.
The best idea of all: heed your mother’s advice.
