- Etiquette is back.
Dear Mrs. Figgins:
My boyfriend and I live in the United States but we’re thinking about getting married in Europe where most of our family is. While not strict orthodox, our families still prefer that honor our religious heritage.
Are there any trends coming about there? Are birdcage veils still popular? Will you please review some points we should consider? We’re worried about the expense, too.
Thank You for your input.
Madeline & Robert, Nova Scotia
Dear Madeline & Robert:
Indeed many couples want their wedding to reflect traditional values and are incorporating their religious, cultural and ethnic heritage.
Many couples are also opting to see each other before the ceremony. However, I personally like the more traditional way and believe it holds the “romance”.
With the global economy being so uncertain, families are also watching their finances more than ever. Many couples are participating in the cost of their own wedding and therefore controlling most of the decision-making. Advice: Spend more on the lasting memories than the frill.
A return to old-fashioned “proper” etiquette is now becoming much more important. Make certain that your thank you cards are promptly delivered – no later than 4 weeks of the wedding.
Personalized appreciation is back. Favours are an expense and easy to consider eliminating, However, most couples are especially grateful to guests who have incurred considerable expense to be a part of the celebration and a personalized favour shows the thought behind the gift. A small chocolate gift box or small champagne favor adds a marvelous touch of elegance.
I happened to attend a wedding recently and the bride wore a stunning birdcage veil. They are popular and allow dramatic vintage glamour.
Many Congratulations!

- Law & Order
FAIRNESS: honest: gained or earned without cheating or stealing. In conformity with the rules or laws and without fraud or cheating.
Is it “fair” to immigrants who have done everything by the letter of the law in order to live in this great country “legally” – to grant full legal benefits to those who have entered this country illegally?
Why does it matter whether someone walks across the border, hops over it, swims in, or applies for legal entry? SIMPLE ANSWER: It is a matter of law and order. It is a matter of national security.
Let’s make something clear once and for all: AMERICANS ARE NOT AGAINST IMMIGRANTS! We are sons, daughters, and grandchildren of immigrants.
Now that we have that out of the way, on to the issues:
Why do we have diplomats around the world?
Isn’t one of the main jobs of diplomats overseas to produce visas and legal documentation for non-American citizens to enter the country?
Why exactly do we need passports? Why require a visa? Why bother with any of this mishigas? If this excercise a sham or a front, then why not just close the embassies down?
Why are the good citizens of Arizona being called “racists”, “bigots” or “Nazis”?
It’s not a matter of whether we are asked for a driver’s license if pulled over. If it makes us safer, then I say “PLEASE, ASK!”.
I happened to be watching the Greta Van Sustern show last evening, with guest Arizona Governor Jan Brewer .
Ms Van Sustern: “Does Arizona feel abandoned by national leaders on the issue of immigration?”
Governor Brewer: “ We do, Greta, we have been fighting this issue, this problem that’s facing Arizona probably for the last 15 years, and now since I’ve been governor, since last January, I have written numerous letters to the administration in regards to securing our borders with absolutely no response, so we — I’ve been facing this crisis, and it’s devastating the people of Arizona. And I feel as governor I have a responsibility to protect the citizens. We’ve been inundated with criminal activity, it’s been outrageous.
Ms Van Sustern: ”The borders still haven’t been secured. Why do you think everybody talks about it but it hasn’t been done?”
Governor Brewer: “It’s very, very frustrating. Arizona is of course catching the brunt of it all. It is unfortunate because it is illegal and is their federal responsibility to secure our borders, it’s not just illegal immigration, terrorists that come across, they’re devastating our ranchers down in southern Arizona, drop houses, kidnapping, automobile accidents, extortion, drugs, the spillover with the drug cartels, we’re facing all of it. And we’re not going to put up with it any longer, and I hope that now that we’ve got Senate Bill 1070 signed and ready to go into law, that we’ll get somebody’s attention. But it is the federal government’s responsibility to secure our borders. States cannot sustain it.”
Ms Van Sustern: “I don’t know whether a court will declare a portion or all of your statute unconstitutional. There’s one part that has caught many people’s eyes. President Obama has described it as misguided. What is your reaction to Obama’s description?”
Governor Brewer: “He has a right to say whatever he wants to say, but misguided, I think he’s wrong. We have a responsibility, I have a responsibility to the people of Arizona, and I’m sure he’s concerned because of the brouhaha and overdramatic comments about racial profiling. I made perfectly clear when I signed the bill that we would not tolerate racial profiling. Our law is exactly like the federal law, and if the feds won’t come in and protect us, then we will come forward and protect ourselves. We have no other choice.”
A nation has the obligation to protect its citizens. Citizens have the obligation to observe the laws. And no country can sustain itself by legalizing or ignoring anarchy
Don’t mean to chicken walk, but allow me a couple of more thoughts:
Haven’t we been told that it is critical that we need to cut our health care spending? Yet neither Mr. Obama nor the party in power have whispered that providing health care for those in this country ILLEGALLY – (millions and millions of them by the way) is a HUGE part of the problem.
Why isn’t it “Nazi-like” to soon demand US Citizens to “show their insurance papers.” Well, like it or not, we’re going to need to prove we have insurance or we’re going to get fined or even jailed. Guess who will enforce this? Yeap, the IRS. And those in the United States “illegally” will NOT have to prove a thing. Not ONE thing.
It’s not a matter of denying health care for the less fortunate. I say, give it FREE – as long as they are in the United States legally.
The United States is a generous and welcoming country. And we are at a fork in the road.
The 2010 elections may well be the most important elections of our lifetime.
By the way: What happened to jobs?

Editorial Reviews
“From noted conservative leader Ken Blackwell and Washington, D.C.-based constitutional attorney and journalist Ken Klukowski comes an urgently needed book about President Barack Obama’s blueprint to centralize power in the White House, subvert the Constitution, and transform the United States of America into a militant, secular welfare state dominated by an overbearing central government.
The authors identify and discuss more than twenty tactics being taken by the Obama administration to restructure the country and ensure perpetual liberal rule—such as changing voting laws, politicizing the census, coercing corporations into adopting its policies, planning to destroy talk radio, and seeking to make millions of illegal aliens into voting citizens. By means both sharp and subtle, President Obama aims to change Americans’ views about government, liberty, and even God.”
· Czars: The authors show how Obama is installing a shadow government of radical appointees not subject to Senate confirmation and answerable to no one but him.
· Courts: The authors have insider knowledge of how Obama will pack the Supreme Court and lower courts with activist judges who will overstep their constitutional authority.
· When Lawmaking becomes Lawbreaking: The authors reveal the ways Obama is consolidating lawmaking power in the White House, in direct violation of our nation’s separation of powers.
“With their characteristic style, Ken Blackwell and Ken Klukowski offer compelling arguments and insights demonstrating that much of President Obama’s agenda undermines our Constitution and America’s system of limited government that keeps us free. An important and timely book.”
—Edwin Meese III, Former Attorney General of the United States and Counselor to President Ronald Reagan
“Ken Blackwell and Ken Klukowski do an outstanding job showing how much of President Obama’s agenda, which is undermining America’s families, also violates our constitutional rights. This is a must read!”
—Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council
“The Blueprint proves beyond a doubt that much of Barack Obama’s power grab is more than just terrible for our economy; it’s unconstitutional. Share this book with your friends.”
—Steve Forbes, Chairman and CEO of Forbes Media, and former presidential candidate

- Don’t put kids at risk!
Dear Mrs. Figgins:
I am a divorced man with two children whom I love very much.
I was dating a woman for four years with a son. We were like a family. She left me for another man and I was heartbroken.
Recently I started dating a woman with two kids. I don’t want to go through another heartbreak. This theme seems to follow me.
Should I not date women with kids?
Francisco
Dear Francisco:
NO. Don’t date women with kids. This “theme” is not about “your” heartbreak. It’s all about the KIDS and their well-being and their heartbreak, not yours.
Be man enough to NOT date a woman with kids if your intentions are to play the field. If that’s the case date a single woman.
It’s that simple.

- LOVE is our buoy.
Dear Mrs. Figgins:
My brother and I are very close. He’s married (2nd time) with 2.5 kids and a partner at a big law firm. He’s also having an affair. Make that 3 in the last 2 years. He thrives on living on the edge. He’s miserable.
I am an auto mechanic, married to a wonderful girl, have three children, and barely make ends meet. I’m in love with my family. Yet I think I’m letting them down because I’m not a great provider like my brother.
Is this something I can correct?
Alex, Edmonton
Dear Alex:
What is it that you are wanting to correct? A great marriage? A great family? Sounds like there’s nothing to correct.
Love keeps life right-side-up. Love gives us balance. Love is our buoy. Without love, we have a hole in our very being. Without love we are empty, nothing is complete.
It seems to me you have it right.
Re-count your blessings Alex, they are priceless.

- Loans???
Dear Mrs. Figgins:
My daughter and son-in-law recently asked my husband Bill and me for a small loan. My son and his wife make a healthy yearly income but one of their “investments” almost failed and it was more comfortable for Mom to help.
There was no paperwork signed. After all, we’re family and I trusted them. They said they would pay monthly. Eight months have passed. They’ve gone on two vacations since.
Maybe they think this is part of their inheritance? BUT IT IS NOT. Bill and I are careful about our money, and don’t have any to “lose”, or we need to go back to work at our age.
Do you think it would be OK for us to bring up the subject?
Greta and Bill, New Mexico
Dear Greta and Bill.
YES, it is absolutely appropriate for you to ask about the monthly payment. The sooner the better.
If it makes you feel more comfortable, ask if you should send a monthly reminder. Either way, you need to address this issue.
This was not an inheritance. You need not feel bad or try to rationalize this.
They owe you the money. Plain and simple.
